i haven't done one of these in a while and they're fun, so
WANT: As anyone from MN will know, Sweet Martha's Cookies = Minnesota State Fair. man, everyone from back home keeps posting stuff about going over the last week and i'm super jealous.
NEED: i guess this is technically more of a want. but i really really wish we had a piano.
WEAR: beanies. i haven't worm a beanie in years but i recently got one and i love it and now i want more. i think they will be my hair staple for the cold months ahead. (which i am so excited for, fall cannot come soon enough! i've been daydreaming about the holiday season so much lately.)
READ: I'm reading LOTR right now. I just finished a book and nothing I've requested from the library is ready for me yet so I just picked up something we already own. I've never actually finished these books, when i was younger i'd always read a couple books at a time, and i'd start one of the LOTR books but then get sidetracked by whatever else i was reading and forget about it.
oh, and speaking of books i recently read this article. also, i found this pretty interesting.

some parts were hard to read, she was sexually assaulted a few times that she shared and her parents barely addressed it and basically just told her to get over it. they were pretty negligent her whole life though.
when she was three she caught on fire while cooking herself a pot of hotdogs and had to go to the hospital for skin grafts, and then her parents busted her out of the hospital because they couldn't pay for it. they ate out of garbage cans at school and lived in places with no electricity/indoor plumbing. she ended up moving to new york when she was 17 with her siblings (and her parents moved out there a few years later) and became pretty successful, and she offered to help her parents out financially but they loved living their life as squatters in new york and told her they were disappointed in her because she sold out or whatever.
i don't think she is necessarily the best writer, but her story is compelling enough that it kind of makes up for it. i started reading her second book Half Broke Horses. it's about her mom's mom, but it is written more like a novel which stylistically i like a lot less. i just barely started it though so we'll see.
it was great. way too hot, but fun. it's been like 100 degree weather, literally, in UT lately but hayley and i decided to take the kiddo to the street fair in Sugarhouse anyway.
we each bought a book:
when it got too hot we took a break in an Old Navy to cool off. then, in the evening, we went to the Bee's game.
we sat in the grass on the side of the field and smuggled in tons of treats.
GOD BLESS 'MERICA.

it was great. some of her stories were so funny and made me laugh really hard. she has a lot of good stuff about being a chubby androgynous little indian kid with a bowl cut. she is just so likable.
there were times where i felt like she was trying to make a joke but it didn't really land, maybe if we were talking IRL it would be funnier. but in writing i think jokes have to be a little more solid. funny remarks in conversation are not necessarily good jokes in writing. it doesn't always traslate, if that makes sense. BUT i think it did help that i know her voice so some things did land because i could absolutely picture her saying it.
also there were a couple times she'd lose me when she would go on about how funny will ferrell is. i think he is almost never funny. i remember thinking he was really funny when i was like 16, because it was my first time being exposed to actual movies that weren't disney or star wars or the other 5 movies we owned. but mindy loves him, which i don't get. maybe it's because she actually knows him in real life, because i think tina fey says she loves him (in her book Bossypants), too. maybe he is a great nice cool funny guy in real life, but that doesn't change that fact that he always plays the most annoying, over the top characters and i just don't find him funny. but i'm getting off topic..
anyway, good book for if you want to read something really light. like to take to the beach or whatever. better than bossypants.
